Safety island's life from Sakhalin to Zelenograd

Zelenograd

Safety islands: why are they necessary, how do they behave in winter and how does road equipment clear the carriageway where they are installed? We are investigating together in Zelenograd with Vasily Vishnevsky, director of the Center for the Development of the Urban Environment.

We with Vasily visited three addresses: Yunosti St., Kamenka St. and Letchitsa Tarasova St. Each of them has a couple of safety islands from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk – we installed them almost two years ago, and they are still in great condition!

Safety islands, including on two-lane streets, significantly reduce the risk of accidents and serious injuries to victims. It has been proven that safety islands do not affect the volume of traffic: on the contrary, if there is no islet at a crosswalk, then drivers begin to brake earlier and traffic slows down.

Zelenograd municipal services do an excellent job of cleaning the islands! It snowed at night in the city, and in the morning the crossing is already cleared and the warning signs are visible from afar. In two years of operation, none of the islets have been damaged during street cleaning!
