Four new Smart intersections in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk

Sakhalinskaya Street

Objectives:

Due to the operation of traffic lights in fixed phase mode at the intersection of Lenin Street and Sakhalinskaya Street, traffic was difficult for both pedestrians and drivers. Cars were congested because of the railroad tracks crossing the roadway, while pedestrians lacked the allotted 18 seconds to cross diagonally.

The pedestrian traffic light at the traffic police building near the intersection of Amurskaya Street and Sakhalinskaya Street was constantly on red, which provoked pedestrians to constantly violate the traffic rules.

Solutions and results

Thanks to SpetsDorProject's traffic engineers it was decided to open two lanes for direct traffic from south to north along Lenin Street, which allowed to reduce the cycle length and waiting time for all traffic participants. Implementation of the "Smart Intersection" system has significantly increased the trafficability of this section: now the adaptive coordinated control promptly "unloads" the carriageway after the departure of trains.

The time to cross the intersection was increased by 6 seconds for pedestrians. SpetsDorProject also introduced a combined pedestrian phase from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. - this shortened the cycle length and also made traffic safer and more comfortable for pedestrians.

The unique "Smart Intersection" system also became operational at the intersection of Amurskaya Street and Sakhalinskaya Street, increasing traffic flow on this section as well. Adaptive coordinated mode allowed to adjust the traffic light near the building of the traffic police: now the green light is always on for pedestrians.
